A report is a true-to-life account of past or present events about a specific topic, theme, or issue. The idea behind report writing is to provide a wide range of information regarding a single topic in a document that can help people who are new to the subject.

Reports make it simple to get somebody up to speed regarding a matter.

Report writing is a crucial part of college assignments as it allows the teachers to understand whether or not the student can understand the subject or not?

However, report writing is anything but simple. So to help you understand what to do and what not, we have compiled some tips to help you write a perfect report.

What is a report?

In layman’s terms, the meaning of a report is a discreet record of any particular issue concerning a specific subject. It can be anything from a court declaration to a college report. It is important to understand what all information is included in a report. Here’s a list of information that is included in the report:

  • Details of about a particular event
  • How does that event affect other situations
  • Statistical or analytical data to support the outcomes
  • Interpretations of the information received regarding the said event
  • Predictions or recommendations for the future based on the events
  • How the information could affect others

What are the different types of reports?

There are various kinds of reports. However, report writing can be classified into three types:

  1. Scientific report
  1. Business reports
  1. Scholastic reports

What’s the most effective method to write a report?

Without wasting any more time, let’s dive deeper into the seven steps of writing a perfect report in college:

1. Pick the subject for your report

Before you begin writing, you want to pick the subject of your report. Generally, the subject of the report is assigned by the subject teacher, but sometimes, they also like to see how creative you can get in terms of your assignment. So, if your teacher has not assigned any topic, then put on your thinking cap and think out of the box.

2. Turn on the wheels of your brain

For your college report or any other type of report, you need to conduct thorough research to compile the best data which will make your report stand out from the rest. A guideline for the research could be provided by your faculty, however, generally, the students should conduct their research based on the subject or topic of the report writing.

3. Start with a thesis

Before you go any further, write a proposal or thesis to explain why you are writing the particular report. You need to conceptualise a basic outline of the principal subject of your report.

4. Set up a blueprint

Writing a blueprint is suggested for a different type of writing material, however, it’s particularly valuable for reports as it gives the readers or your audience a better understanding of the topic. Since a report may have many headings and subheadings, you should decide on a blueprint which will allow you to focus on your topic while writing and without missing anything.

5. Work on a draft before finalising the report

Writing the first draft is an extremely crucial part of the process and normally can be very tedious too. However, where you take all the data that you gathered from research and put them in an easily understandable order is very important. Try not to get distracted by too much information and lose sight of your report. Read and see where you are going before finalising your report.

6. Reexamine and edit your report if you are off the track

When your work in progress is done, now is the perfect time to return and begin fixing the errors that you might have overlooked in the initial stage of report writing. You need to be very careful during this stage as it could make or mar all your efforts up until now.

7. Edit and make the final report that you need to submit

Lastly, it doesn’t hurt to go over your report one last time, just to edit your report or simply use new or fancy terms to rephrase the content. At this stage, you must check for grammatical or spelling errors. In the previous steps, you should check errors that might change the final results, e.g.: a wrong example or irrelevant information.

Conclusion:

Report writing can be tough but an interesting learning process. At Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth, the faculty is helpful and always welcomes any questions that the students might have regarding any subject.
